Before the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, Olivia Rodrigo said in an interview that the name came from a picture in her head of girls sitting under a tree making daisy chains, flower crowns and friendship bracelets. This vision came to life on August 29, when the 23-year-old pulled off a massive charitable event with an all-women lineup – including Bikini Kill, Chappell Roan, Die Spitz, Doechii, Eli, Mistki, Not For Radio, Santigold, and Stevie Nicks – raising $20 million for organisations like National Domestic Workers Alliance and Planned Parenthood. I’m here to report that there were young girls sitting under trees together that day (it was scorchingly hot). Also, teen girls dancing at performances, dads wearing “Daisy Chain Dad” tees, couples in matching outfits and more.

The best word to describe the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival is wholesome. It was my first time attending a festival where I didn’t have to worry about being stepped on or elbowed by someone in the crowd. Sure, this is likely because of its all-women focus, but it’s also rare to bring 45,000 people together and find that everyone is considerate. Generally, the atmosphere was excitable but kind: people shared their water with teens who were struggling in the heat, and cried when a photo of Dolly Parton came on the big screen. 

The festival style was also carefree: in fringe boots, glitter and flower crowns, young girls crowded around Etsy Creative Village at the festival to DIY their own butterfly temporary tattoos, marvel at the bead water foundation and meet the sellers behind Rodrigo’s exclusive handmade merch collection.

PARIS OWENS, 24, CHICAGO

Who are you here to see?

Doechii, for sure. Her energy is amazing. She’s been my favourite artist for the last couple of years, and I’ve never seen her live. I’m so excited. 

What’s your Daisy Chain Festival style inspo?

I guess Olivia. But it’s just kind of fun: something that reminds me of daisies and being whimsical, which is what I feel this festival is. My friend and I are matching. 

What makes or breaks a festival outfit?

Anti-chafing stick. It’s not really an accessory, but my legs rub together like nothing else.

What’s your Daisy Chain Festival style inspo?

Kaili: I was trying to go for a very boho vibe, but I wanted it to be really airy. I wanted to have kind of a lot of flow to it, but also be pretty comfortable.

Rease: I was really trying to go for a boho chic vibe. I’m just leaning into some of my Coachella looks from earlier this year, and having fun with it.

What makes or breaks a festival outfit?

Kaili: I definitely think being super comfortable is the goal. I really like having my stomach out because it is really airy. But I also definitely think pockets are essential. I always have back pockets.

Rease: You have to tie your own personality into it. My favourite colours are pink and white, so I really tried to tie that into my look. And then just add your own favourite things and make it super cute.

Adriana: Not For Radio and Olivia.

What’s your Daisy Chain Festival style inspo?

Adriana: I was going for a dark fairy vibe, and then I looked at Rave DIY, and I wanted to DIY my own outfit, so that’s what I did. 

Jessica: I was going for a fairy with the flower vibe, but also rave inspo. 

What makes or breaks a festival outfit?

Adriana: I think it just needs to be you – as long as it has a unique character that really screams yourself.

Jessica: I feel like you need accessories.

What’s your Daisy Chain Festival style inspo?

I just threw something on because I haven’t worn this dress and got it for my birthday. My birthday is tomorrow. I’m turning 18. 

What makes or breaks a festival outfit?

It has to be shiny. I have sequins on my dress, and I love covering myself in glitter. My look is kind of worn out because it’s been a long day, but I always carry glitter spray. Do you want some?

This is a Japanese yukata set, and it has my dog on it. It’s a Pomeranian.

Whatever you like. Just put it on and express yourself in your own style.

Olivia Rodrigo. This is my fourth time seeing her live.

Olivia. I recreated her festival run. Then the sash was inspired by the “Obsessed” music video, but we did a twist on it. I’m “Miss So In Love” and my boyfriend is “Mr So In Love”.

Sparkles, glitter.

I didn’t have any specific outfit inspiration, but I really like the look of vintage lingerie in outfits, so when I thrifted this top the day before, I knew I had to wear it. 

What makes or breaks a festival outfit?

A good festival outfit is comfortable and designed for the weather of the event. I knew it would be hot, so I wore breezy clothes!
