A typical field and arena is far from the only place “the beautiful game” is played, however. For freestyle footballers like Janella Hernandez, herself, a ball and some creativity are all that’s needed to experience football. Freestyle football is the art of doing tricks with a football, and it’s a bigger deal than you might think. As the World Freestyle Football Association notes, it’s “an art form, a sport and a lifestyle.” Of course, 26-year-old Hernandez, who first discovered freestyle as a teenager, already knows this. Today, the first-generation Guatemalan American has made a career out of her love for freestyle and works as a creator making content at the intersection of football and fashion. Despite freestyle being a male-dominated arena, Hernandez has been able to carve out her own lane within the space, gaining a following thanks to her unique combination of impeccable skill and fits. There, Hernandez took us inside the event, where football fans got to see PUMA’s new travelwear kits and Bembury-designed sneakers for themselves.
