Now, 60 years later, carnival has grown into a formidable cultural event, with over two million people from across the capital – and the country – descending on West London for the bank holiday weekend. Alongside the traditional exports of Notting Hill Carnival – soca, calypso, reggae, dub, curry goat and roti, for example – every year we see London’s finest hit the streets in summer fashion tailored to the event. “From Jab Jab to Mas, as well as the Caribbean nation flags, the streets are filled with carnival-affiliated attire,” says photographer Ollie Tikare, who captured this year’s carnival for Dazed. “For many, it’s an opportunity to honour their ancestry and celebrate the vibrancy and colour that glitters throughout much of Afro-Caribbean style.” Hitting up his usual spots – soundsystems Channel One, Gladdy Wax and Aba Shanti – Tikare explored the vibrant spectrum of what Notting Hill Carnival has to offer. “I was drawn to some in more traditional costumes, but it was those doing things with a twist that turned my head most,” he says. “The multi-striped string t-shirt, the yellow zebra leggings, the retro rude boy hats, the twins in matching yellow outfits, the crocheted beanie, and the Jamaica flag worn as a headband.” Scroll through the gallery at the top of the page for all the best looks Escape the algorithm!
